About the Commission
Overview
National Commission for the Investigation of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster and Prevention of Recurrence
The tragedy that unfolded on the night of October 29, 2022 in Itaewon left a lasting scar on the hearts of everyone in Korea.
The grievances of bereaved families who lost their loved ones and of those who lost dear friends, the reality of victim-survivors who had not been guaranteed safety and still have to bear the brunt of the consequences alone, and the yearning of the people who promised that “things must change” in the face of recurring tragedies all culminated in a special pledge.
That shared resolve led to the enactment of the Special Act on the Protection of Victims’ Rights, Fact-Finding, and Prevention of Recurrence of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster.
Pursuant to this Act, the National Commission for the Investigation of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster was officially launched on September 13, 2024.
The Commission is committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation into how and why the disaster occurred.
We will examine the underlying causes, emergency response, and subsequent actions, working to clearly identify the lines of accountability.
This is not merely an effort to examine the past; it is the first step toward ensuring a safer future for all. Furthermore, we are dedicated to honoring the memory of the victims, listening attentively to the voices of the affected and the bereaved families, and ensuring their rights are fully protected.
Rebuilding broken trust and finding a path for the community to heal together is one of the Commission's most vital responsibilities.
Although uncovering the truth may be painful, we will not turn away.
We will remember, record, and implement measures to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, while working to transform the systems and culture that allowed it to happen.
At the end of this journey, we believe we will reach a safer society that never takes a single life for granted.
Our commitment to this vision remains unwavering.
