Chair Song Doo-Hwan Pays Courtesy Visit to National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-Sik

The Chairperson called for the National Assembly’s attention and support to expedite the passage of the amendment to the Special Act on Protection of Rights of Sufferers, Truth-Finding, and Prevention of Recurrence of October 29 Itaewon Disaster, which includes an extension of the Committee’s term.

The National Commission for the Investigation of the October 29 Itaewon Disaster and Prevention of Recurrence (the “Commission”) visited the National Assembly on the afternoon of July 20 to pay a courtesy visit to National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-Sik.

Chair Song Doo-Hwan expressed his gratitude, stating, “Past Speakers of the National Assembly have played an important role in uncovering the truth about the Itaewon disaster,” and asked for support, saying, “Please help the Commission successfully complete its truth-finding efforts.”

He continued, “An amendment to the Special Act on Protection of Rights of Sufferers, Truth-Finding, and Prevention of Recurrence of October 29 Itaewon Disaster that would extend the Commission’s mandate has been introduced, but it has not yet been referred to a standing committee.” He added, “I am deeply concerned that if the amendment is not passed promptly, all the efforts of the Commission—which got off to a difficult start through a bipartisan agreement—could come to nothing.”

Meanwhile, Chair Song Doo-Hwan also paid courtesy visits to National Assembly Deputy Speakers Nam In-Soon and Park Deok-Heum on the same day and requested the National Assembly’s continued attention and cooperation regarding the Commission’s activities. //End//
